City/Village Council

Indiana

The City Council makes financial and legal decisions for the City. The City is divided into four council districts, each represented by a council person elected by the district. There is also one member elected as an “At-Large member”.  City Council approves budgets and passes ordinances that regulate activities within the city.

Union City Council has the task of controlling the finances of the city, as well as passing ordinances.  Ordinances are local laws that are used to improve the quality of life within the community. Most ordinances are proposed to address an existing problem or situation, such as traffic control, property controls, and utility operations.

Ordinances are composed by the City Attorney at the request of City Council. The proposed ordinance is then read and discussed at an open council meeting.  The ordinance may then be passed, but in order to become in effect, any ordinance requires two readings and votes. An ordinance may be read twice and passed at a single council meeting if the council declares such an ordinance to be an “emergency.”  This is seldom the case, though. All city ordinances are available online by clicking here.

The City Council meets the 2nd & 4th Mondays of every month at 6:00 pm in the Community Room at 103 N. Columbia St.
