Image of Criminal with FlashlightCrime and criminals are a fact of life; as old as Man himself.  While we may live in a relatively low-crime area, anyone may become a victim of criminal activity. Reporting all criminal activity to the police should be the duty of every citizen. Unreported crime is the criminal’s greatest asset, as police will not be aware of the locations the criminal is active. To report crimes of all types, call the Union City Police Department at 765-964-5353. An officer will take a report on the crime and file it so other officers can be aware of criminal activity in the area, assisting with the investigation. Most police departments have evidence rooms full of recovered property where the victim has not reported the theft. Be pro-active about your personal security and the security of your neighbors! Report all crimes and suspicious activity to the police.

Indiana

Health Hazards

Health Hazards are a community concern. Randolph County has a Department of Health located at the Randolph County Family Services Center, 155 E South St. Winchester, IN. 765-584-1155.

The Health Department receives information about health hazards such as food poisoning, rodent infestation, hazardous waste, disease, and other threats to community health. The health department also provides immunization and files birth and death certificates.

Food Poisoning Signs & Symptoms:

The symptoms of food poisoning occur because food-borne bacteria release toxins or poisons as a byproduct of their growth in the body. These toxins (except those from C. botulinum) cause inflammation and swelling of the stomach, small intestine and/or large intestine. The result is abdominal muscle cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and the chance of dehydration. The severity of symptoms depends on the type of bacteria, the amount consumed, and the individual's general health and sensitivity to the bacterial toxin.

Food Poisoning Prevention:

Food poisoning is almost entirely preventable by practicing good sanitation and good food handling techniques including:

  • keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold
  • cook meat to the recommended internal temperature, use a meat thermometer to check and cook eggs until they are no longer runny
  • refrigerate leftovers promptly, do not let food stand at room temperature
  • avoid contaminating surfaces and other foods with the juices of uncooked meats
  • wash fruits and vegetables before using
  • purchase pasteurized dairy products and fruit juices
  • throw away bulging or leaking cans or any food that smells spoiled
  • wash hands well before and during food preparation and after using the bathroom
  • sanitize food preparation surfaces regularly

Graffiti Image Graffiti is found everywhere.  Some believe it is art, other vandalism. The painting of someone’s property without permission is always a crime however, despite its possible artistic value. Graffiti of this type needs to be reported and cleaned up as soon as possible, as study show if it is not removed, it leads to further vandalism. The effect graffiti can have is to foster an atmosphere of lawlessness, leading to a higher crime rate. We must not look at graffiti as an “innocent prank” it has real consequences for the community. Report any graffiti found or people in process of painting graffiti to the Union City Police at 765-964-5353.

Mosquito Image

Mosquitoes are a nuisance! They are also a health hazard, especially today with the spread of the West Nile Virus. Combating  Mosquitoes can be done on two fronts; removing breeding sites and personal protection through clothing type and use of repellant's .

Mosquitoes need water to breed and grow. Some tips on how to prevent this in your area are:

  • Dispose of any tires. Tires can breed thousands of mosquitoes.
  • Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers.
  • Clear roof gutters of debris.
  • Clean pet water dishes regularly.
  • Check and empty children’s toys.
  • Repair leaky outdoor faucets.
  • Change the water in bird baths at least once a week.
  • Canoes and other boats should be turned over.
  • Avoid water collecting on pool covers.
  • Empty water collected in tarps around the yard or on woodpiles.
  • Plug tree holes. Even the smallest of containers that can collect water can breed hundreds to thousands of mosquitoes. They don't need much water to lay their eggs. (bottles, barrels, buckets, overturned garbage can lids, etc.)
