When a position comes open with the Village police department, it is listed internally (for current village employees) for 5 working days. We then interview the internal applicants.
We don't always hire from the internal applicants. When no one is hired from that group we advertise for a limited time to take applications. When the advertising period is complete, these applicants are reviewed.
A requirement for consideration (for both full and part-time applicants) is that they have passed an Ohio police training course (today over 500 hours) given at several local colleges.
Applications are narrowed down to the top three candidates. These candidates are then interviewed, background checks performed, and interviewed again.
A test is then administered by the Chief and Asst. Chief in questionnaire form. We then take our top choice to our Village Council. If they approve, we require the selected applicant take a physical exam which is required by the State Police and Fire (this exam is required for full-time applicants only). The applicant must pass the physical before being sworn in as a full time officer.
Once sworn in, they must spend many hours of training before going out on their own. Our part time officers must pass the same Ohio police training course before they will be considered.
Once a member of the police department, there are several meetings every year that our officers must attend. Shooting range qualifications are required once per year with both day and night shooting demonstrated. We train many part-time officers who go on to other departments in full time positions. Of course, we get to keep a few from time to time when there is an opening on the department.
